Chicago: The Musical
Directed by Susan Thornton What becomes a legend most? For a couple of Jazz Age entertainers, it's all about fame, fortune—and murder. This Kander & Ebb classic, with Book & choreography by Bob Fosse set in prohibition-era Chicago, is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice and the concept of the "celebrity criminal." Based on a 1926 play of the same name by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins about actual criminals and crimes she had reported on, Chicago won six Tony Awards in 1997, including Best Revival – Musical.
The Larry Project in its world debut at Maryland Ensemble Theatre
It’s Valentine’s Day in July as two former Comedy Pigs unite to present an original comedy showcasing modern relationships. Gary Mahmoud and Lisa Burl met each other in 2005 when Gary auditioned for the MET’s comedy troupe, The Comedy Pigs. Although she thought he looked like a jerk during the audition, Lisa voted to let him join the troupe. She was right about the jerk part. Nonetheless, they discovered they shared the same sense of humor and quickly became good friends. Gary moved to New York in 2007 but the two remained quite close and longed to once again perform together. They finally took matters into their own hands and wrote their own show, The Larry Project. The Larry Project was developed and written over a five month period of time through emails, telephone conversations, Skype video calls and occasional face-to-face interaction. The show is highlights six connected relationships in a Manhattan apartment building with eleven characters played by the two actors. Please be advised that the show is not for everyone. This show contains language, adult themes, and subject matter and is not for the easily offended. You may be amused, aroused, or disgusted. So, if you feel like coming, bring some Kleenex. The Larry Project runs July 30 @ 8pm, July 31 @ 8pm & 10pm. Tickets are $10. For tickets or more information call the MET Box Office at 301-694-4744 or visit www.marylandensemble.org
An Eclectic Mix: Art Show by Bev Reidinger
This exhibit will feature mixed media work by award-winning artist Bev Reidinger, whose passion and excitement of creating art is obvious in her colorful canvases. Having a wide range of subject matter and mediums that she uses, it is always amazing to see what new materials Bev has included into her work. You will not be surprised to see her use old scrapes of music, dollies, even bottle caps to create whole pieces of art. Not relying on photographs or set up still life to create her work Bev likes to rely on her imagination and memories as references . She likes the freedom to be expressive so there are no preconceived ideas as she approaches the blank canvas. Every painting has a special journey of its own. She has participated in many public art projects such as the Keys To Frederick project, Arts A Ball, Art Out Of The Box, and Festival of Greens. Reidinger received the top award for her "Juke Box" in the Recycle My Old Fridge show at the National Builders Museum.
Romeo and Harriet (a musical)
Act Too! Children’s Theater Company presents "ROMEO AND HARRIET” (a musical) This hilarious musical spoof puts the “shake” in Shakespeare! With the help of a group of quarreling chorus members—Oregano, Carpaccio, Risotto, Prosciutto, Antipasto, Pesto, Mayo and Romano—we get a deliciously funny spoof of Romeo and Juliet. Their comedic and intelligent commentary seasons the show with laughter galore so actors and audience alike won’t even realize they’re learning about Shakespeare! The stage is set in modern-day New York City, where clerks of the swanky Montague’s Department store and the second-rate Capulet’s Discount Mart meet in the street to trade insults. Words are their daggers, so watch out, you might die laughing! Naturally, the heirs to these two retail empires, Romeo and Harriet, fall in love, but don’t think you know the rest… this musical has a happy ending! “Humph. Call yourself a tragedy,” exclaims Oregano at the end of the show, disappointed to find no dead bodies. Nope, it’s pure comedy with pie fights in place of duels, a nurse obsessed with paper cuts, Romeo dressed in a white leisure suit à la John Travolta and an outrageous parody of the most romantic scene in literature. A fun, eclectic collection of musical numbers underscores all this hilarity, including a number in iambic pentameter! It would be a real tragedy to miss out on this one! Performances are August 6th and 7th at 8pm and August 8th at 2pm. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for children. For tickets or more information, please contact Act Too! at www.act-too.com.
